David, a talented accountant, was aiming to be a Partner in a major firm.
He had excellent technical skills and knew the world of corporate finance inside out. Only his poor writing skills were holding him back.
He sat facing the blank screen of his computer, gripped with panic. Eventually, he forced himself to press the keys: the screen filled with a few words here, half a thought there. It took nearly an hour to assemble a haphazard collection of convoluted sentences. The results were as disappointing as usual, and David knew he could expect a pageful of red-pen corrections from his manager and a perplexed email from his client.
At last, he booked himself onto the one day Writing for Results course. There he learned the essentials of an efficient writing routine. The next day he returned to his desk and enthusiastically prepared his next report. Remembering to focus on his reader’s needs and his own purpose, he planned the document logically. Then he used the plan as a step-by-step guide to writing simply, sentence by sentence.
As he read through, checking for errors, he realised he had written a first class document one that would tell the client exactly what the client needed to know - in half the usual time. He twiddled his thumbs and noticed there was a deep blue sky framed in the UPVC of his office window. Now, he wondered, should he tidy up his paper clips or book in that promised game of golf with the new Director?
David’s work was transformed; at last his expertise was apparent in his letters, emails and proposals. His clients were impressed and naturally his profitability soared. His colleagues were impressed too, and they made him a Partner!
